Texans aren’t afraid of a little heat. We have outdoor activities all summer long. Here are some tips to make sure you and your family enjoy the summer heat and stay safe.
Enjoy the Fireworks, Then Clean Them Up
Every year we have a wonderful patriotic July 4th celebration at the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum. The music, fireworks, and activities make it a great time for kids. Still, there is the temptation to light up your own fireworks. If you are planning to light up some fireworks this year, take a look at some safety information first. You’ll also want to look at your local regulations because fireworks are not always allowed.
There’s also the cleanup after the show. While you want to make sure nothing is burning before you rake or sweep it all up, there’s no need to put it off until the next day. In fact, clean up time will help you be alert to any fireworks that may still be a fire hazard. Make sure you have a fire extinguisher on hand. A water hose can be used to soak the debris you sweep up. Everyone will sleep easier knowing that you’ve gotten rid of potential fire hazards.
Stay Hydrated
Make sure that through all of your outdoor activities, you keep some water handy. Consuming alcohol may make you feel like you’re not thirsty, but alcohol can leave you dehydrated. Drink plenty of water, and if you’re going to be in the heat, you should probably avoid alcohol.
Keep a reusable water bottle handy for outdoor activities. While buying water in plastic bottles is handy, they aren’t good for the environment. Remember to recycle your plastic water bottles and soda cans.
Sun Protection
Sunblock isn’t just for trips to the pool. It’s good to keep some handy even if you expect to be in the shade. You never know when a cookout in the shade will turn into volleyball in the sun. Hats can offer some protection, but any skin that will be exposed to the intense Texas sun should be protected.
If you are going to be around water, remember that the reflected light from the surface of the water will intensify the effects of the sunlight. Wear sunglasses and sunscreen.
If you’ll be swimming near in a local lake, leave the beer bottles at home. An overly enthusiastic child may run right through the remnants of a broken bottle. Falls onto broken glass are also dangerous.
Have Fun
While you’re out enjoying the beautiful Texas weather, remember to be safe. Safety often involves cleaning up after yourself. Use reusable containers whenever you can and when you can’t, make sure to recycle.
